Black Star Bright Dawn
Scott O’dell
Fiction
134 pages

The novel, Black Star Bright Dawn, By Scott O’dell is about an Eskimo girl named Bright dawn

who’s father is a hunter. One day Bright Dawns father got offered to join a huge dog sled race called

the Iditarod, because of his skill in controlling  dogs while they are attached to a sled. The first time

they asked him he said no because he thought dogs are for work and not fun. Bright Dawn and her

mother kept bring up the race to her father and finally got him to join the Iditarod. The next day

Bright dawns father took her out to see him hunt the bearded seals. Later that day Bright Dawn

stopped paying attention to her father while he was hunting and her father was floating on a block of

ice that broke off from the land he was hunting the seals on. It took them two days to get her father

back to land and they had to cut off four of his fingers to keep him alive.  After this incident her

father had a phobia of water  Because of this he could not go on the dogs sled race but

the government paid too much money to support him in this race. So he said my daughter Bright

Dawn will race in my place.  At the starting line she met a veteran named Oteg. Oteg

gave Bright Dawn strategies on how to stay alive during this race.  Bright Dawn had one of her most

favorite companions on this dog race and his name was Black Star A Husky breaded from a wolf.

Black Star was the leader of her dog sled team and warned Bright Dawn if there was danger ahead.

During the race bright dawn faced many obstacles like wolves chasing her, or wild moose wondering

on to the trail. But one of Bright Dawns greatest enemy was the weather. One day during the race

there was a huge blizzard and Bright Dawn could not see the track so she trusted Black Star to get

them somewhere safe to spend the night. But Black Star couldn't see either so he accidently led them

onto a piece of ice that broke off from the main land and she lost ground to other competitors of the

race. To save her, her father got over his fear of water to saved Bright Dawn. But Bright Dawn

Wanted to give up but her father said that she cannot come home until She passed the finish line.

And when she passed the finish line her whole village congratulated Her. Even though she was dead

last

The things I liked about my book was the action, the hope, and love. An example of action in this book was when Bright Dawn was running blind and accidentally led her dog sled team onto a block of ice that broke off of the main land. An example of hope in this book was when her father rescued her and said” you are still in this” even though everyone has passed her. Finally the last example from the book I would like to share with you is about love. An example of love was when her father got over his fear of water to save Bright Dawn.  Something I didn’t like in this book was when after Bright Dawn got saved by her father she didn’t want to continue the race she just wanted to quit and go home. Another part of the book I didn't like was when one of her best sled dogs dies because her dog was trying to protect her from a wild angry moose.  I would recommend this book to a person who likes reading books full of action and emotion.

  2. Wow, I think if I read this I would be in tears, but that's not a bad thing. Just imagine if your dad got stuck on a chunk of ice and then you have to compete in the dog race and finish or not come home. You explained it very well and I can't wait to read it!

  3. This book sounds like a great read! It sounds like such a very tense book with a lot of suspense. I also really like the relationship between Bright Dawn and her father. Especially the part when he had to get over his fear of water to save her. You really did a great job on this!
